Over-used Phrases
Phrase | Issue |
---|---|
"Hidden gem" | Initially this was a fine term that was useful for describing quality games that happened to be obscure. However, with the advent of video game channels on the internet, the first thing anyone talks about are the best-known and least-known titles. As a result, obscure games are no longer obscure, so the "hidden" part of "hidden gems" no longer makes any kind of sense. Additionally, it is irritating when "gem" is mispronounced as "gym" or "Jim". |
"I cant recommend it enough." | Yes you can. We get the idea. |
"I see what they were trying to do." | That means they did not achieve it. Don't be afraid to call a spade a spade. |
"...in my opinion" | Who else's opinion would you bother to present? It's not your job to present the opinions of others, naturally you are best suited to present your own. That phrase adds nothing to the conversation. It's just time we'll never get back. |
"It's good, but it's no (insert game title here)" | The phrase is tiresome from overuse. |
"...favorite game of all time" | What's wrong with simply saying "favorite"? Nothing. Adding "of all time" is (A) redundant- because favorite already means favorite, (B) incorrect- because you are judging many present and future games without playing them, and (C) adding "of all time" just sounds like an extremely desperate plea for attention- as if no one would listen to or respect your opinion without those extra magic words at the end. It's like saying "pretty pretty please with sprinkles and a cherry on top" instead of just saying "please", it's childish. |
"Rinse and repeat." | The phrase is tiresome from overuse. It comes from a shampoo bottle. Sounds more like a phrase you'd find in a fashion magazine. |
"The future looks bright." | The phrase is tiresome from extreme overuse. Naturally technology advances, but that doesn't mean we won't have new problems like rushed deadlines and games that need patching. |
"What can you say that about this game that hasn't already been said?" | That sentence took up our time and gave us nothing in return. Tell us your sincere thoughts anyways or just say nothing. |
"Titular character" | You can stop using that phrase on games with a playable female, we've had more than enough of that. |
"I love me some" | Do not say "I love me some Tetris", just say "I love Tetris". It's hard to sound more backwoods, ignorant, and cringe-worthy than saying "I love me some", it's not funny it's awful. Even Yoda has better grammar that's less backwards. |
"The parallax scrolling is really impressive!" | Look, I admit that when it first came out it was cool. But 30-40 years later we do not have to act like it's the most amazing thing in the world every time it pops up. |
"I haven't played it much, but in the little bit I've played..." | Then be quiet. If you are too lazy to do the research then I don't want to hear your uneducated opinion. Play it for a decent amount, then open your mouth- I'll be ready to listen when you actually have something to say. |
