Role-Playing Games

A Role-Playing Game recreates the experience of playing a 'Tabletop' or 'Pen & Paper' RPG like "Dungeons & Dragons" or a 'Collectible Card Game' like "Magic: The Gathering".
  Recreated elements include:
- Dungeon Master narration: "Wild PIKACHU appeared!"
- Character leveling (dynamic statistics): "SQUIRTLE gained 67 EXP. Points!
                                            SQUIRTLE grew to level 6!
                                            ATTACK 11, DEFENSE 13, SPEED 10, SPECIAL 12"
- Combat based on dynamic statistics & dice roll percentages (sometimes turn-based)
- Building a party of characters

Role-Playing Games use dynamic statistics to level up your character. This is a much more in-depth system than the comparatively simple limited upgrade systems found in Adventure games like Zelda II (1987) and Super Metroid (1994) see "Adventure Games" for more on upgrades.

Role-Playing Games vs. Adventure Games
Dynamic statistics Upgrades

Many Role-Playing Games play like Adventure Games with dynamic statistics "tacked on" with similarities such as interconnected areas, and requirements of skills/items/information to proceed. However some RPGs are much simpler, presenting you with a linear series of battles, eliminating exploration entirely.
