Scouters

In a Scroller like Super Mario Bros. (1985) all you have to do is reach the flagpole to exit the level, but in a Scouter like Little Nemo The Dream Master (1990) you are required to collect all the keys before you are allowed to exit. If you don't have enough keys with you then you must go back and scout out the level to find them. This adds just a slight hint of Adventure to your Scroller.
Other examples of Scouters include Snake Rattle n Roll (1990) where you have to collect enough balls in the level to increase your weight and open the exit, or Sonic 3D Blast (1996) where you cannot exit a level until you have collected all the Flicky birds.
